In 1983, Solana Center for Environmental Innovation (then Solana Recyclers) pioneered the first comprehensive curbside recycling program in San Diego County and one of the first community-based recycling programs in the State of California.

Recently, in the last three years combined, Solana Center composting programs have enabled the diversion of an estimated 6 million pounds of organic waste from the landfill, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 11,500 metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent, and returning valuable nutrients back to the soil without the use of harmful chemical fertilizers.

Annual Impact

Each year we continue our efforts by:

Reaching 25,000+ San Diego County residents and 10,000 students through our environmental education and community outreach programs, from Fallbrook to San Ysidrio, and from Oceanside to Ramona
Selling over 4,000 composting bins/accessories and rain barrels
Teaching 100+ gardening and composting classes
Addresses more than 800 environmental inquiries
Managing a strong, dedicated community of volunteers who log 1,500+ volunteer hours annually
Training 80 Master Composters who become community volunteers and composting advocates
Continuing to add capacity and infrastructure to divert millions of pounds of organic waste from landfills
